“No distinguen la obediencia de la servidumbre”. Jerónimo de Quiroga un soldado escritor en la interfaz hispanoindígena, Chile 1644-1704

We analyze the thoughts and itinerary of a king’s soldier in the southern limits of the Spanish Empire, during the second half of the seventeenth century, considering his particular way of understanding obedience and authority. We seek to comprehend the articulation between the tenor of his chronicles, based on a strong tendency towards dissent, and his own performance in the Spanish-indigenous wars in Chile. All of this leads us to characterize conflicting indigenous policies within Spanish society, when it is confronted to colonial disability in front of the Araucan-Mapuche sovereignty in the south of Bío-Bío River.Se examina el pensamiento y el itinerario de vida de un soldado del rey en los confines australes del imperio español durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII, considerando su manera particular de entender los límites de la obediencia y de la autoridad. Se busca comprender cómo se articula el tenor crítico de su crónica, sustentada en una fuerte predisposición al disenso, con su propia actuación en las guerras hispano-indígenas de Chile. Esto lleva a caracterizar políticas indígenas contrapuestas dentro de la sociedad española, confrontada a suimpotencia colonial ante la soberanía araucano-mapuche al sur del río Bío-Bío
